The Missouri Reader, Issue 2

The second issue of The Missouri Reader has been released and is available online!  It highlights articles about utilizing comics and graphic novels in the classroom, close reading in the content areas, promoting informational text reading online, and producing a podcast to increase high school students’ motivation—among many others.  You will not want to miss anything this issue has to offer!

Nixerest, August 2014

The beginning of the year is such an exciting (and possibly a little crazy!) time for teachers.  Looking around the classrooms and hallways of Nixa would make anyone wonder, "Who needs Pinterest?!?"  Yep...this can only mean one thing, friends....it's time for the first NIXEREST of the year.  Wahoo!

Setting up expectations at the beginning of the year is one of the MOST IMPORTANT things you do!  Relyn Lawson's second graders made these posters about their behavior expectations after reading Pete the Cat and The Recess Queen.

Pam Clark's firsties discussed how to show they were being good listeners using their whole body as well as how to show they can be responsible mathematicians!

Consider allowing students to create their own "rule reminders" in the hallway by drawing pictures and listing expectations.  This gives students ownership!

Remembering everything you need to do in your new environment can be hard!  Layne Eckhardt helps her students by posting reminders about routines!

Speaking of reminders...sometimes teachers need them, too!  Check out this adorable (and super useful!) hanging organizer for notes!  No more walking out the door without remembering something important...well, if you remembered to put it in the organizer. HA!

Once you start jumping into content, add to your skills as you teach them, just like Cami White's editor's checklist.  This is less overwhelming to students and is a great visual.  Once the skill is up, the expectation is set!

Check out how Carey Davis organized her guided math tubs.  All of the materials she needs for each station can be found in the tub, which can easily be carried to wherever it needs to go.

You can even greet students at the door with content review.  We found the most adorable "Sound of the Day" sign in front of Josh Gasser's classroom!  SHazam! (get it?)

Send us your favorite classroom ideas so we can add them to the next issue of Nixerest!

Assessments on the Grade Level Pages

Can we just say how much we <HEART> the new online curriculum grade level pages?  Again, they are a work in progress, so you may see tweaks here and there.  Have a suggestion?  Let us know!

Take a look under the "Assessments" heading for your grade level page.  They are organized to go right along with the Assessment Schedule.  Doesn't it just make your heart happy to have it all in one, organized, easy-to-find place?

This example was taken from the Kindergarten Page:

Just take it all in for a minute....

Yep, it's the little things!

2014-2015 LNW Calendar

Literacy the Nixa Way

Our LNW Calendar is ready for you to view!  It is conveniently located on the right sidebar of the LNW blog for you to access at any time.  Under "LINKS", simply choose "Calendar".  This will show you the monthly calendar view of the schedule.  In this calendar, you will also find a link to the "Master Schedule" which lists each teacher's name beside the LNW date.

Based on the LNW feedback from last year, the first LNW session will be a full day, the second LNW session is a half day, and the final LNW session is a full day.  You will have time to collaborate with teachers from other buildings during our LNW sessions.  We have also implemented the suggestion for classroom observations and coaching.  Each ELA teacher will schedule at least one observation time for an instructional specialist to visit their classroom.  Teachers will sign up for these observations during the first LNW session.

The meeting times for LNW are below.  All ELC, K, and 1st grade meetings will be held at High Pointe in Room 316. All 2nd-6th grade meetings will be held at FAC in Room 219 (upstairs).
